Sealants

Back to Dental Clinic Overview

Sealants are a thin coating on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, typically the back teeth (molars and premolars). Sealants help prevent cavities. Getting sealants is fast and easy!

Who can get sealants?

Children and adults can benefit from sealants, but the earlier you get them, the better. Your first molars appear around age 6, and second molars break through around age 12. Sealing these teeth as soon as they come through can keep them cavity-free from the start.

How do sealants work?

Sealants protect the grooves of the teeth. The grooves are high risk areas for cavities to develop. Sealants work by keeping germs and food away from those grooves. However, there is still a chance of developing cavities, especially between the teeth, so make sure to brush and floss!

How long do sealants last?

It depends. Sometimes sealants last many years. Sometimes they chip, become worn, or fall out over time. Your dentist will check the sealants at regular check-up appointments, and they can be replaced as needed.
