What happens at the checkup?
Your dentist will check your teeth and evaluate the other areas of your mouth. We will take any necessary x-rays, inform you about any areas of concern, and discuss your treatment options. We will also give you recommendations for keeping your mouth as healthy as possible.
What happens at the cleaning?
Your dental professional will remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from your teeth. We may also recommend preventive services like fluoride varnish or dental sealants.
How often should I have a dental checkup appointment?
You’ve probably heard that you’re supposed to visit the dentist every 6 months. This is good advice for some people, but it isn’t the best plan for everyone. Patients with more dental problems should see the dentist more frequently, like once every 3 months. Patients who have no dental problems might be okay with less frequent visits, like once a year, or once every two years. Everyone is different. Ask your dentist what’s right for you.
When should children have their first dental appointment?
We recommend the first dental appointment at age 1.
Will I get the checkup and the cleaning on the same day?
We do the checkup and the cleaning at the same appointment when possible. For adult new patients, we do the checkup at the first appointment the cleaning at a separate appointment. Patients with extensive dental problems may also need an additional appointment for the cleaning.
